stories that lie above the world and beyond the norm

Dubai’s most atmospheric restaurants for the creative in you

Dubai’s dining scene is ever-evolving, and the sheer number of places to go to can feel overwhelming. We’ve narrowed down our search for restaurants that fall into 3 categories: food, interiors, and atmosphere.

Each of these restaurants is a vignette in its own right, transforming culinary, interior, and atmospheric details into an artistic canvas.

Bisou

A restaurant imagined as a love story, Bisou draws its soul from the romance between a French librarian and an Arabic poet. That narrative seeps into every corner, rows of books punctuate the interiors, chandeliers shimmer like stage lights, and the mood feels deliberately theatrical, as if each table were a scene in a play. The space is layered, intimate yet dramatic, a setting where design and storytelling are inseparable.

The Vibe: Dark academia meets French ethereal brasserie.

Perfect For: Creative souls who dine where literature and light entwine (we rhymed here to be a little poetic)

Location: Downtown Dubai, Opera District.

Must Order: Beef Bourguignon, rich, aromatic, and melt-in-your-mouth tender.

Open daily from midday-midnight.

Gusto Restaurant & Cafè

Tucked inside Burj Daman, Gusto feels like a slice of Milan carried to Dubai with effortless style. The space balances polish with intimacy, marble and bronze details meet soft light and curated art, creating a setting that feels both elevated and personal.

Founded by Carlo Tinelli, whose Milanese roots shape the concept, Gusto moves through the day like a rhythm: morning pastries and espresso, lunches that invite conversation, and dinners that slip easily into candlelit evenings. It’s Italian hospitality translated into a DIFC frame: measured, warm, and quietly chic.

The Vibe: Milanese artisanal sophistication.

Perfect For: An Italian business lunch that lingers into the evening.

Location: Burj Daman, DIFC, Dubai.

Must Order: Spaghettone al cacio e pepe, a simple masterpiece of cheese, pepper, and perfectly al dente pasta.

Open daily from 7.30 AM-10.30 PM.

Kumo

Kumo means cloud in Japanese: a detail that feels especially resonant for us (no prizes for guessing why).

We’ll admit, the name had us before the menu did. But step into its all-white Al Wasl villa and the metaphor unfolds beautifully: exteriors pared back to pure minimalism, interiors softened with pale wood, shōji-style screens, and light so gentle it feels brushed on.

The energy here is quiet but deliberate, every detail purposeful, from the chefs’ red and white attire (a nod, perhaps, to balance: discipline and purity) to the presence of the uchiwa fan, a centuries-old emblem of grace and stillness. Dining at Kumo feels less like spectacle and more like ritual: space, soul, and subtle Japanese touches held in balance, like the spinning koma toy, motion paused in stillness.

The Vibe: like stepping into a cloud

Perfect For: a soulful dining experience that balances artistry and calm.

Location: Al Wasl, Dubai.

Must Order: Beef gyoza, delicate and soulful, with crispy salmon rice for perfect contrast.

Open 10AM–11PM (Mon–Thu), 10AM–12AM (Fri–Sun).

The Culinan

If you treasure timeless luxury, then The Cullinan is a feast for both palate and eye. Named after the world’s largest diamond, this steakhouse gleams like a jewel inside Jumeirah Marsa Al Arab.

Polished interiors, sharp lines, and light designed to move with the day. Visit at noon and the sun carves dramatic shadows across the room; stay into the evening and those same edges melt into softness.

The ethos here is one of wonder, of dining elevated to an encounter: the menu itself looks hand-painted, a curated journey from shore to sea. Yet, it is the reputation for meat that sets The Cullinan apart. Steaks served with a precision that feels almost criminal. Luxurious without being cold, this is dining as an ode to craft, place, and presence.

The Vibe: Timeless Luxury

Perfect For: Special occasions

Location: Jumeirah Marsa Al Arab, Dubai.

Must Order: Signature steak: perfectly seared, deeply marbled, and worth the splurge.

Open 12PM–12AM (Mon–Sun).

Sexy Fish Dubai

“Fortune favors the bold” could well be the tagline for Sexy Fish Dubai. Step inside and there’s an immediate sense of luck, of having stumbled into a world designed to overwhelm in the best possible way. From London’s Berkeley Square to DIFC, the restaurant carries its signature drama: Damien Hirst sculptures rising like mythical guardians, a ceiling that glitters like scales, and floor-to-ceiling views of the Dubai skyline.

It’s maximalism, unapologetic and deliberate, every flourish considered. The Japanese-inspired menu echoes the room itself, bold, intricate, and meticulously composed. Sexy Fish is for those who live in full color, who see drama not as excess but as another form of creativity.

The Vibe: Underwater fantasy dressed in unapologetic glamour.

Perfect For: The bold creative who thrives on spectacle but craves substance.

Location: DIFC, Dubai.

Must Order: Caramelised Black Cod with spicy miso.

Open 12PM–2AM (Mon–Sun).
